Hennepin County Library – Walker is one of seven recipients of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and American Library Association (ALA) 2016 Library Building Awards. The award was established “to encourage and recognize excellence in the architectural design of libraries.” The architectural firm of VJAA designed the building.
The awards jury said, “This library has a great civic presence that enhances the Uptown community rather than overpowering its neighbors. The interior layout is a clean, flexible design with a clear delineation of the built spaces and the open spaces that are again reflected on the exterior.”
Recognizing the importance of community involvement in the planning process, VJAA Principal Jennifer Yoos said in an interview in Architect, the Journal of the AIA, “They [the community] were really important in the process of helping us craft a project that was more progressive than we might have expected.”
The Walker Library opened in April 2014.
