The Walker Library Community Advisory Committee's (CAC) representatives did a great job presenting the "CAC Vision for a New Hennepin County Library - Walker" to the Designer Selection Committee (DSC).
The next steps for the CAC will begin after the DSC makes their recommendation to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners in late summer. The news concerning the consultant selection will be sent to the CAC as soon as the County Board approves the DSC's recommendation.
The Hennepin County Designer Selection Committee (DSC)* held a preliminary meeting on April 21 at the Hennepin County Government Center. Hennepin County Library Director Lois Langer Thompson talked about the future of libraries. The Walker Library's Community Advisory Committee (CAC) sub-group presented the CAC Vision Statement for a New Hennepin County Library Walker. Following the presentation, CAC members Holland Wood, Katherine Himes, Shaun Laden, Gary Thaden and Christina Melloh spoke with DSC members about how the demographics in Uptown would affect the new library's design; how does the Uptown community feel about the current library building; and the importance of community engagement during the planning and construction process.
The Request for Proposal (RFP) will be issued in mid-May. The DSC will review proposals, shortlist the number of applicants and conduct consultant interviews. They will make a recommendation to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners in late summer.
The CAC's vision statement and the description of the DSC process are attached for further information.
* The DSC is an advisory, non-statutory body that assists the County Board and the County Administrator in the selection of architectural and engineering consultants for major facility construction and remodeling projects. The DSC has no approval authority but does select consultants and recommends them to the County Board for approval of contracts that are negotiated by County staff.
