Today at Family Storytime one little boy helped read his favorite book, Truck by Donald Crews. Each time I turned the page, he would point to the picture of the truck and yell, "Truck!" with the same amount of enthusiasm each time. It was a good reminder to me of what it's like to be with those early talkers. If you have such a child at your house, you know how challenging it can be to keep the conversation fresh. There are only so many times you want to say, "Yes, that's a truck." So here are a few tips we've learned in our journeys. Build your child's vocabulary by specifying-- "Yes, that's a truck. It's a cement mixer." Encourage their words by asking questions: "What color is the truck?" and "Where do you think the truck is going?" And, to help you on your journey with your truck or train-obsessed child, check out the Things That Go books!
