				<title>Carol Bly&amp;rsquo;s new book? &amp;ndash; Dec 26, 2007</title>
			<description><![CDATA[Carol Bly&rsquo;s obituary was in the StarTrib a few days ago. Just prior to that was this article in the paper:<br />
&quot;Jim Perlman, publisher of Holy Cow!...has signed a contract to publish Carol Bly&rsquo;s new novel &quot;Shelter Half&quot; (June 2008) a murder mystery set in Northern Minnesota.&quot;&nbsp; Patrons have been calling and asking about this new title. So far, it appears only on WorldCat.]]></description>

				<title>Reference Roundtable--December &amp;ndash; Dec 19, 2007</title>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">1) Two tips from the book &quot;Rule the web&quot;:&nbsp;&nbsp; <a href="http://www.hclib.org/temp/OLKB5E/www.Bookfinder4u.com">www.Bookfinder4u.com</a> is a site that &quot;compares book prices at 130 bookstores&quot; including Alibris and Abebooks. Easy to use, with quick links to the sites and other options.</div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><a href="http://www.hclib.org/temp/OLKB5E/www.zabasearch.com">www.zabasearch.com</a> is a people search site that provides phone numbers, addresses, and quick links to maps. It is cluttered with offers for additional services like social security number search, but did provide a phone number when other sites did not, so is worth remembering.</div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">2) Reminder via Scott Hanson that the search engine <a href="http://www.hclib.org/temp/OLKB5E/www.altavista.com">www.altavista.com</a> has a page that allows searching for MP3 and other audio files.&nbsp;It was recently used to find a recording of the Bow Bells (aka Whittington Bells) in London and a recording of Lowell Thomas. &ndash;D. <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">Another quirky source for residential directory information is <strong>Ancestry Library Edition</strong>.&nbsp; Go to the &quot;Directories and Member Lists&quot; section listed on the right sidebar and scroll down and click on &quot;U.S. Phone and Address Directories, 1993-2002&quot;.&nbsp; This is suppose to include U.S. phone books published between 1993 and 2002 and is a good way to locate former addresses -K. Poole.&nbsp;</div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">1) The online Picasso Project &ndash; <a href="http://picasso.tamu.edu/Picasso">http://picasso.tamu.edu/Picasso</a></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">Is a comprehensive illustrated catalogue of over 13,752 catalogued works by Picasso hosted by Texas A&amp;M and many international collaborators. &ndash;M.Yannie</div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">2) When asked about sources that review charities, it should be taken into account that many sites, including the ones listed on the HCL homepage at Consumer Information&gt;Charities (Charity Navigator, Charities Review Council, National Charities Information Bureau, etc.) are not near to being comprehensive.</div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">As stated by the Charities Review Council concerning their site:</div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="color: black">&ldquo;The charities that have reviews in the Giving Guide have demonstrated a commitment to openness by voluntarily participating in an Accountability Wizard review. The Accountability Wizard is a tool for nonprofits that is based on adherence to the Council&rsquo;s Accountability Standards and requires a small administrative payment. Donors should not draw conclusions about organizations not listed.&rdquo; </span></div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="color: black">This could be interpreted that charities not listed have not demonstrated openness, adherence, or accountability in some manner.</span></div>

<div>The Staff Web, under Partnerships &amp; Communication, then Partnerships - Donations has some useful documents. Check out the &quot;Donations of books and other materials Fact sheet&quot; for specific language to use with customers. If a customer needs suggestions for other organizations that accept donations, the link to the Fugitive Fact (Books and Magazines Donations) is also available. &ndash;P. Johnson</div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">&nbsp;1)&nbsp; Martindale-Hubbell Law Digests <br />
Southdale had the only print version of this annual set of law digests, summaries of the laws of U.S. states and international countries - 150 digests in all.&nbsp; LexisNexis discontinued the print edition, substituting a CD-ROM product.&nbsp; Since HCL had only one print subscription, we received the rights to only one CD-ROM product.&nbsp; That product has been loaded on the Westlaw machine at Southdale only.&nbsp; The link to it is on the Westlaw main page.</div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">3.&nbsp; A second look at <a href="file://www.iseek,org/">www.iseek,org</a> <br />
Sd discarded its 2002 copy of Directory of economic development resources and services, by Twin Cities Economic Development Group.&nbsp; Both the organization and the directory appear to have discontinued.&nbsp; The forward to the directory mentioned that the information was also available at <a href="file://www.iseek.org/">www.iseek.org</a>.&nbsp; I had looked at this site when it first came out, but looked again now and was impressed at the links to a wide-ranging group of service agencies that expand options for job seekers:&nbsp; e.g., links to housing agencies, legal help agencies, help for new Americans, etc.</div>

<p>&quot;The Minnesota State Department of Health has asked the Minnesota Historical Society to stop loaning microfilm reels of death certificates due to personal identity concerns and national security. Copies of individual death certificates can be ordered through MHS at the following link:</p>
