.Have you ever written a letter you didn't send? Why did you write it? Did it make you feel better?
.Who besides her father does Isabelle write to? How does Isabelle use her letters to get people to do what she wants them to do?
.Do YOU write letters? To who? Why?
.Isabelle uses letters to tell stories in a way she wants people to hear them. For example, why does she change information about her new family and her new house in her letter to Eleanor, the girl who lived next door to her in Zumbrota? How does this compare to what she tells her Aunt Izzy?
.What did you think of Isabelle's plan to adopt bad habits so she can be sent home from Aunt Jaye and Uncle Bernard's?
.It's fun to read a book that takes place in Minnesota. Have you been to any of the places that Isabelle mentioned, such as St. Paul? Zumbrota? Delano (baby Franklin's middle name)?
.Can you imagine being separated from your mother and brothers and sisters? What do you think that would be like? What would you do to try to be together with them again?
.When Isabelle first finds out about Mr. Frank in a picture Jimmy Jordahl drew, why do you think she doesn't want to write about him to her real father?
.Do you think it was hard for Isabelle to call Mr. Frank "Dad"?
.How can you tell there is a war going on?
.What role did the church have?
