1.What was the society of Aramanth like? What were some of the rules in Aramanth? Do you think the rules were fair for everyone? How did being in different ranks affect different people? (Write on flip chart.) Compare to the lives of Mud People.
 
2.Why didn't the Hath family fit in with their society? List ways each family member is different. (Kestrel, Bowman, Pinpin, Hanno, Ira) How do they try to change their society and help the people?
 
3.What do we know about Mumpo and why is he important to the story? How does he change over the course of the book? Does his father change?
 
4.What is the Wind Singer? Why is it important? Why does Kestrel go there when she is upset? Why does Kestrel set out to get its voice back? Who puts it back?
 
5.What were some of the adventures the three children had on their quest? Who were some of the people (and animals) they encountered and what did they do?
 
6.What were some of your favorite scenes from the book? Which were funny, sad, etc.?
 
7.What did you think of the Emperor? Describe him.
 
8.What are some similar stories you have read? (Lois Lowry's The Giver?) What are some other stories that introduce us to worlds that are very different from our own?
 
9.How can a society have rules and still allow individuality and freedom? Talk about conformity vs. individuality.
