1.What do we know about Winnie Foster? (write on flip chart) What was she like at the beginning of the book and how did she change?
2.Compare Winnie's family to the Tuck family. Compare the Foster home to the Tucks' home. (flip chart)
3.Why did the Tucks seem so child-like? What were the differences between Miles and Jesse? How did each of them see life? How did Mr. Tuck feel about life (p. 63)? Mae?
4.Why didn't the man in the yellow suit have a name? Did your opinion of him change as you read the story? What if he hadn't died?
5.When did the story take place? What did you find out from Winnie's monument on p. 138? When did the Tucks first drink the water?
6.How could Winnie tell if the Tucks were telling the truth about the water making people immortal? Did she see any proof? Do you think Winnie made the right decision in not drinking the water? What would you have done? Who would you give the water to? Should she have given it to the toad? What would happen to the world if everything (even mosquitoes) lived forever?
7.Were the Tucks criminals? Was what they did right? Did Winnie do the right thing in helping them? What would have happened if they had tried to hang Mae?
8.Do you think the Tucks could survive in today's world without being found out? What would happen to them? How has the world changed?
9.Did you like the author's writing style and descriptions? Do you think the book started out too slowly? How did the author's descriptions of weather and nature relate to the story?
