What in American society has changed so dramatically that nearly 64 percent of us are now overweight? This is a subject much discussed in the media these days. Even TLC Cable Channel offers "Honey We're Killing the Kids" a startling look at the causes of childhood obesity! Studies implicate factors such as cheap fats and sugars used in food processing, larger portions, eating out more often, decreased activity, marketing strategies, lack of nutritional education, food as entertainment and diet fads. The medical consequences of those extra calories are causing mental and physical suffering in increased numbers of children and adults from Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, gall bladder disease, stroke, orthopedic problems, and increased risk of cancer. Food production and safety concerns are also of vital interest. Listed below are some titles of books that can help you understand the facts of food composition, good nutrition, and appropriate energy intake. At the same time these authors make this subject so interesting that weight will fall off you as you read them!

As the cornucopia of the modern American supermarket and fast food outlet confronts us with a bewildering and treacherous landscape, what's at stake becomes not only our own and our children's health, but the health of the environment that sustains life on earth. Pollan follows each of the food chains -- industrial food, organic or alternative food, and food we forage ourselves -- from the source to the final meal, always emphasizing our coevolutionary relationship with the handful of plant and animal species we depend on. The surprising answers Pollan offers have profound political, economic, psychological, and even moral implications for all of us. Book Summary.
