Cover ArtChulito
by Rice-Gonzalez, Charles
Now listed amongst my favorites is a vibrant, vivid tale of CHULITO, a sixteen year old gay Latino male and the earnest love he holds for his bestfriend, Carlos, his Bronx neighborhood and the people whom it inhabits. A not-to-be-missed read, as Rice-Gonzalez tackles some hardhitting struggles for a gay Latino gangster who must choose, not only between his love of hood vs. man, but also between staying in the game or living free and honest.   posted May 21, 2012 at 5:51PM

Cover ArtDon’t let me go
by Trumble, J. H.
Robin Reardon calls this book, "charming." I call that nepotism. Don’t Let Me Go is the story of Nate and Adam. Nate grew up under the wing of his overbearing, unloving father, a high school football coach. Nate was expected to play football the rest of his life, marry a nice cheerleader and settle down. Instead he met Adam, an artistic teen and quit the football team. One night, after a party, Nate is gay bashed and nothing is ever the same, and then Adam is accepted to and leaves for New York to study at a prestiges art school. All that SOUNDS like it would provide a good plot, unfortunately and however, the opposite is true. The only lesson, if one was even meant to gather one, is that if you behave like a nagging, clingy, needy, cheating, lying and hypocritical bee-ahtch for 326 pages, you will then be rewarded with positive and supportive friends, a trusting and loving husband, an over-admiring lover, and a baby! Thanks for the lesson J. H. Trumble.   posted Apr 11, 2012 at 6:44PM

Cover ArtThe unloved [videorecording]
While watching this film, I began to suspect that this film might be an autobiographical piece by Actor/Director Mortonson. The girl who plays Lucy looks like she could be Mortonson, and I was aware that Mortonson was of Irish decent. Turns out I was correct, to some extinct, Mortenson confesses in the Special Features. She grew up in homes just like the one in the film, until the age of 16, but says was more like the "Lauren" character, than Lucy. In UnLoved, eleven year old Lucy lives with her abusive father, until going to school one day and asking to "speak with my Social Worker, please?" after her father has just beat her with a belt for coming home without either the money and/or cigarettes he sent her out to get. Though the father is played by renowned actor (until Stargate Universe) Robert Carlyle, it is a bit part. He is only shown is flashbacks after the initial beating and then a five minute bit afterward. This film will surely be hard to take for some. There are no happy endings, only more harsh realities...or, perhaps not? Mortenson says she wanted to give the audience the sense of hope. That wasn’t what I came away with, but then that may have more to do with my own life rather than Lucy’s. Take from it what you get, but I guarantee, whatever that is, you won’t regret having seen this film.   posted Apr 4, 2012 at 2:14PM

Cover ArtSea of tranquility
by Russell, Paul Elliott
Just repeating the title alone always makes me smile fondly, with a warm sense of remembrance, pride and heartache. A tale of love, loss, life and redemption. Characters so well written, you will remember them long after you've read the last line. Russell at his best! You will not be able to put this book down!   posted Mar 17, 2012 at 5:08PM
