 The gangs of New York : an informal history of the underworld by Asbury, Herbert, 1891-1963. I thought that Luc Sante's "Low life : lures and snares of old New York" (see farther down this list)was a better book, this still had some nice information about very early gangs and rotten characters. posted Jul 2, 2012 at 5:09PM
