I find his earlier work to be much funnier because it is so much more shocking and sick. Toward the middle of the book I was already sick of it all (and I even found myself becoming depressed). The end of the book was a relief, because you find that Ivan is in a much better place emotionally and mentally, but I felt like the humor was really lacking... Maybe I'm just a sick puppy? These books were the source of so much childhood anxiety for me. I remember having panic attacks at the very mention of "Scary Stories". As if Mercer Mayer's art wasn't cute enough, he had to go and do something I'm a sucker for. This has been a fave of mine since I was about 10. I had only ever heard of Jaime once through a really old issue of Wizard magazine. I only recently got a chance to really get a good look at his work when I found this at MPLS CENTRAL LIBRARY and now I'm in love! Maggie, Hopey and the rest of the girls (even the boys) are all lovable and beautifully drawn. Jaime's art is PERFECTION! Classy and retro, but punky and fun! It's simple, but heavily detailed.
