Amen, Daniel G. Magnificent Mind at Any Age Based on up-to-date research, plus Dr. Daniel Amen’s twenty-plus years of treating patients at the Amen Clinics using brain imaging. Dr. Amen shows how many of the traditional approaches to overcoming the mind-centered challenges that hold us back—try harder, work longer, find the sheer willpower—either do not work or may make our problems worse. The true key to satisfaction and success at any age is a healthy brain. 2008 |

Cohen, Gene D. The Mature Mind Aiming to debunk the myth of aging as an inevitable decline of body and mind, Cohen introduces the concept of developmental intelligence, a "maturing synergy of cognition, emotional intelligence, judgment, social skills, life experience, and consciousness." Expanding on Erik Erikson's developmental psychology, Cohen postulates that there are four phases of psychological development in mature life: midlife re-evaluation; liberation, a desire to experiment; the summing-up phase; and encore, the desire to go on. Drawing on the results of two groundbreaking studies, Cohen illustrates that the years after age 65 are anything but "retiring," and that creativity, intellectual growth and more satisfying relationships can blossom at any age. 2005 Appears on the following book lists: |

Davis, Jordan K., The Brainpower Plan A neuroureon who studied the brain and treated its dysfunctions for more than thirty years, Dr. Davis helps the reader avoid the all-too-prevalent choices that can diminish the brain's power and quality of life. He begins by outlining the brain's structure and the different functions of each part, then discusses the three primary neurological diseases that can befall the brain: strokes, which he calls brain attacks, Alzheimer's and other memory-impairment diseases, and Parkinson's disease. He shows how these are not the unavoidable genetic consequences of the aging process they were previously thought to be, but are, in most cases, treatable and avoidable. Dr. Davis details all the risk factors for these and other diseases and then presents his super strategies for brain health. 2006 |

Perlmutter, David, M.D. The Better Brain Book This book is divided into three tiers: factors affecting mental function, tools for developing a better brain, and specific brain disorders. Perlmutter shows how brain aging can be prevented and clarity can be regained by making dietary adjustments. He warns of the dangers of using prescription or OTC drugs that may be "interfering with your brain's ability to function at optimal levels." From stomach acid suppressors to antidepressants, medications lower brain antioxidants, they say, leaving dangerous free radicals room to roam. 2004 |
