This is a fantastic crime novel and it’s so much more. A lot of the pure "crime" stuff actually takes a backseat to the author’s tour through Washington DC and the discussion of DC’s social and political (mainly social) problems. The characters are deep and realistic and the plot, while not the crackerjack stuff of other crime/mystery writers, is highly engaging. The moral is that things aren’t always what they seem to be. A good read.
