Walter Farley, born in 1915, is best known for his Black Stallion series for young adults. Farley began writing his stories about horses when he was eleven years old, before he had any real experience with horses. He finally acquired some first-hand experience when he was a teenager working at his uncle's riding academy. Farley began writing The Black Stallion when he was a student at Columbia University and completed it during his first job in advertising in New York. It was an immediate success when it was published in 1941. Farley served in the army in World War II where he wrote the second book in the series, The Black Stallion Returns. After his discharge from the service in 1946 he became a full-time author. Farley wrote 20 novels in the Stallion series; the books have been published in 14 languages.
