The summary of this book does not do it justice. The book isn’t about how Mary grew up impoverished - it is about the racial discrimination she lives with every day. From police officers watching her husband getting beat and intervening only when it looked like he might win the fight to her sister being sterilized against her will, Mary introduced me to a world that I never had to face. She is a brave woman to prosper in the face of adversity.
