Gerald Durrell was born on January 7, 1925 in Jamshedpur, India to British parents. After moving to the United Kingdom and mainland Europe, his family eventually settled on the Greek island of Corfu where he studied zoology and kept numerous local wild animals as pets. In 1945, he became a student keeper for the Whipsnade Zoo in England. He went on wildlife expeditions to Cameroon, British Guiana, Madagascar, and many other countries. He founded the Jersey Zoological Park and the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust with the purpose of breeding endangered species. My Family and Other Animals is his best-known book and tells of his childhood on Corfu. In 1962, he and his wife went to New Zealand, Australia, and Malaya to film a TV series, Two in the Bush.
