Wonderful book with none of the debate or jumping to conclusions found in other bios. Bryson takes pains to make it clear that there is very little primary source documentation of Shakespeare’s life and most of what we think we know is supposition. Not a big book, written in with Bryson usual flair. Great for Shakespeare first-timers.

Everyone is familiar with Shakespeare but did you know that he created such phrases as "one fell swoop", "be in a pickle" and "budge an inch" or the words "excellent" "vast" "critical" and "zany"? This refreshingly pithy book is packed with interesting facts like these along with a witty narrative about the life and times of Shakespeare. Bill Bryson's engaging style is always a pleasure to read.
