I am of two minds about this book. Reading the story was for me similar to hearing a distant conversation, perhaps two rooms over, where the intonation and flow of words hints at a fascinating adventure but the words are not completely heard. Some aspects of the book were delightful—a clown on the run from the Ministry of Justice, the Tax Authority, and a mysterious group of monks! The idea of a person’s spirit being heard as music is lovely, and the references to many classical works made me long for a soundtrack to the novel. In the end, though, I had more a sense than I had dreamt of reading this book rather than actually being able to delve into the story.
