What other readers are saying about this title:
This book was recommended to my by my friend Gail. She is always reading and always recommending things. Of course I have other books to finish, but when I started reading this one I could not put it down. Forgive me, I am a crappy writer and reviewer... but I really, really enjoyed this book a lot and thought I would try to tell you a bit about it. "My mother used to tell me about the ocean. She said there was a place where there was nothing but water as far as you could see and that it was always moving, rushing towards you and then away. She once showed me a picture that she said was my great-great-great-grandmother standing in the ocean as a child. It has been years since, and the picture was lost to fire long ago, but I remember it, faded and worn. A little girl surrounded by nothingness." These are the first words in the book. These words, this story told to Mary (our main character) by her mother as a child stay with her through everything that happens to her in this book. It was one of the many stories that her mother would tell her as she was growing up. Mary lives in a time where everything that the people in her village do on a daily basis is to ensure their survival and bloodlines for future generations. The people of her small village are protected by a large fence surrounding the village as well as by the Sisterhood and the Guardians of the village who help to keep them safe from what is outside the fence. They are told by the Sisterhood that they are the only people left in the world and that nothing exists outside the fence except death. Everyone there lives a pretty simple life. They all just want to be happy and survive. The people do as the Sisterhood tells them. The Sisterhood is like the government and church rolled into one. They are in charge and whatever they say goes. The Sisterhood is the keepers of the information from generation to generation. They educate the people about the Return and how to avoid becoming infected by the Unconsecrated (zombies) that roam the forest in search of the living to feed off of. If bitten you will die and become one of them. A horrible fate for any of the living. Mary's father is missing when the story begins. Her brother Jed is married and his wife is with child. Jed is one of the Guardians of the village. Both Jed and Mary have accepted that their father will never return and has been infected. Their mother still hopes and watches for him by the fence every day. Mary has dreams of marrying for love. She dreams of one day being able to leave her small fenced in village to go out past the forest and find the place where there is nothing but water as far as you can see. She is told by many that these are silly dreams. She is told marriage is not about love it is about commitment. She is told that there is nothing to go to outside the fence and that the ocean does not exist. In Mary's world a woman basically has three choices in life. To get married by accepting the proposal of a man and have a family of her own, to be taken in by her relatives if she is not married and help take care of them or join the Sisterhood. Mary wants to get married and is interested in a boy called Travis, but it is his brother Harry who asks for her as he tells her that Travis has asked for her best friend Cass. She has no interest in joining the sisterhood so she has to decide if she will accept Harry's offer or turn him down. On the same day he makes his offer to her the unthinkable happens and she finds out her mother has been infected by getting too close to the fence and bitten... I told you I am a bad writer and reviewer. I am not really sure how to go on without giving away the story. I can tell you that I really enjoyed this book a lot and I don't usually read zombie stories. I kept wanting to see what would happen next to Mary, Harry, Travis, Cass, Jed and his wife. It was a fast read. Only 308 pages and I finished that in less than a day. I really have been enjoying these YA books. Fun reads.
