A young German girl living in Holland during WWII discovers that the house she lives in used to belong to a Dutch family who were evicted when the Nazis took over. Quite by accident, she finds a secret passage which contains a secret that might put her and many others in danger.
Plot - Very original and executed delightfully well. 5/5
Characters - Very believable and near-to-life. One is able to identify with them easily. 5/5
Writing style - Like all of Hilda van Stockum's books, the style is immpeccable. 5/5
Content - This book is recommended for those age 14 and older. The plot deals with the horrible reality of the Holocaust. There is also a sub-plot involving the main character's married mother and a man who desires her as his wife. There is a scene in which drunken men attempt to kiss the main character. She escapes before anything more occurs. The main character experiences a very sweet romance. 4/5
Overall - A wonderful, if bitter-sweet story which explores the theme of reality vs. a dream world. 5/5
This author has always impressed me, and I would recommend any book by her. This, however, is my absolute favorite, which I have reread many times over.
