In this science fiction alternate history novel the Axis powers are victorious in WWII and the characters live under totalitarian fascist imperialism. Several characters in The Man in the High Castle read the popular novel ’The Grasshopper Lies Heavy’, a novel within the novel which posits an alternative universe where the Axis powers lost WWII. This is only one of the devices that PK Dick uses to create a sense of an interpenetration of true and false realities, questioning the claim of the legitimacy of any one reality.
