After reading about 3/4 of this novel, I felt the story was afflicted with a Jekyll and Hyde complex: I liked the subject but grew to dislike the main character, Rob Fleming. His passion for classic rock and vintage music on vinyl, and how music was ingrained into his very being, is to be commended (making a compilation tape — no iPods yet — for someone who might enjoy his style of music was a highlight in his day). However, the bulk of the novel dealt with his relationship with his girlfriend, with flashbacks interspersed to bring reader’s up to speed on how Fleming handled past relationships. For a guy his age (mid-30s), his maturity is questionable. He’s clearly a confused adult carrying a lot of baggage. I did finish the book though, and it was somewhat interesting.

Too funny! In the end, a sweet love story. The movie starring John Cusak is also pretty good.
