Michael Devlin, is a boy just coming of age in post-war [1947] Brooklyn, the same year Jackie Robinson joins the Dodgers. He makes the acquaintance of Rabbi Judah Hirsch, fortuitous for many reasons, and an unlikely one for this Irish-Catholic boy.
Hamill is a master of this time and place; great realistic characters with all the joys and disappointments of growing up in an immigrant neighborhood. A page-turner for me.
