A complex novel connecting a series of very well developed characters. Beautifully written and very powerful in parts. One of my three favorites for fiction in 2011.

Lives and stories intersect on a single day in New York City in 1974. Wonderful storytelling allows the reader to engage with characters that are unexpectedly connected.

After hearing Irish author Colum McCann speak at Central Library, I finally read his wonderful award-winning novel Let the Great World Spin. A truly masterful piece of work. I love how McCann weaves Philippe Petit’s stunning 1974 walk between the Twin Towers into the lives of so many diverse New York characters.

Colum McCann's masterpiece is thought-provoking, moving and a little slow for those not taken with his narrative hook: the tightrope walk of Philippe Petit. Worth a read, though, for the author's remarkable ability to understand characters of such varied backgrounds and personalities. He has true compassion for these people, whatever their flaws, and his ability to make each of them human to the reader is a remarkable accomplishment in and of itself.
