Jane Gross writes the story of her mother’s decline and death. Jane and her brother moved their mother back from her retirement condo in Florida to live near them in New York, when she became too frail to live on her own. This narrative contains the hard-won knowledge of the traps and tribulations involved in dealing with assisted living and nursing homes, medicare and long-term insurance, elder law and family relationships. Although the subject of the book is dealt with in a realistic, unsentimental way the narrative is engaging and never bogs down. As a long-time caregiver for my husband I can affirm that her insights are helpful for situations not limited to the care of ones elderly parent, and her advice (notably as to so-called assisted living apartments) is right on target. I highly recommend this book for all people engaged in, or anticipating dealing with their own or a loved ones worsening illness or end-of-life issues.
