Widely praised as a skilled, even brilliant, writer, Coplin paces her story much the way life must have been in 19th-century California: slow, deliberate, simple. I can’t say her protagonists completely captured my attention, much less my heart, but this is a masterful work in many ways and sure to be appreciated by book clubs looking for meaningful discussion about complex characters.
