Summary: Was there a second diary chronicling Columbus's voyages to the New World, written by his sailing companion, Las Casas? Some scholars at the Library of Congress think so, and pre-Columbian expert Annabel Smith has been commissioned by the library's magazine, Civilization, to write about it. She is not the only person interested in the subject. Wealthy bibliophile Harold Adler has been offered Las Casas's diaries through the rare books underground. Not only are the diaries for sale, a map purportedly pinpointing Columbus's treasure-trove is part of the package. Adler would kill to possess this rarest of treasures. So would a right-wing, anti-Semitic organization. Concerned that Las Casas's diaries might confirm Columbus's Jewish origin, they will squash any knowledge that America was discovered by a Jew. Annabel begins her research in the Hispanic division of the Library of Congress. Simultaneously, a TV investigative journalist chases the Las Casas story using her own resources. As she and Annabel hone in on the missing diaries and map, they move closer to personal danger. Was the murder eight years ago of the library's leading Hispanic scholar connected to the coveted diaries and map? Annabel suspects that it was, and digs deeper into his death, using the vast, barely explored recesses of the huge library itself.
