Fay : a novel
Brown, Larry
Adult Fiction BROWN
From Library Journal:
When 17-year-old Fay Jones decides to leave her dysfunctional family and the abandoned country shack they live in, she has only $3 stuck in her bra, the clothes on her back, and a pair of worn-out sneakers on her feet. Fleeing the unwanted physical advances of her father, she doesn't care where she goes just so long as it's far away from him. Hitchhiking along Mississippi roads, she gets the notion she should just go on down to Biloxi, a place she only knows by name. Along the way, her life will impact others in ways no one can foresee, usually with tragic consequences. After a near disastrous episode with a group of drunken men who give her a ride, she is rescued by a highway patrol officer named Sam Harris, who takes her home to his wife, Amy, who is still grieving over the death of their teenaged daughter. A slice of sad Southern life with a few measures of comic relief, this is a love story with a punch and characters you won't soon forget. Tom Stechschulte reads with a resonant voice that moves seamlessly among characters, both male and female, without disrupting the narrative flow. His portrayal of Sam is especially effective. Highly recommended for all collections.ÄGloria Maxwell, Penn Valley Community Coll., Kansas City, MO (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
