in german literature we have gunther grass with his fantastic world war2 epic the tin drum which a great read. if you are native american or catholic even, you have a novel that reaches nearly the same heights with: the last report of the miracles at little no horse. in this book we have the tales of fr. damien modesta and her (yes her), life among the native people of the dakotas. this book is fantastic and sad; humorous and dark all at the same time. erdrich writes with much the same grace and ease that grass did in his famous book. this is not just storytelling at it's best; it is storytelling as an artform. like the afore mentioned author, ms. erdrich too is a poet and it shows. the book has so many delightful characters, but for me the delightful fr. damien was just so well done. also check the library's audio tape of this book. it is also done very well.

This book was amazing! The multiple stories of different lives were woven together so well and in such a fascinating, believable way. Father Damien's struggles were such that we can all relate to, and the spiratual aspect of the book interwove traditional Ojibwa rituals and beliefs with Catholic ones. Entrancing.
