This book is full of excitement, adventure, and so much more. It is about a girl named Esperanza whos birthday is a couple days away. She knows her dad is going to get her the most extravagant gift like he does every year. The clock ticks but no who comes threw the door, her servants go out to look and they find him...dead. Esperanza can’t believe it! Esperanza’s uncle wants her mom to marry him or something very bad will happen to them. Her mother says no. That night the house burns down and Esperanzas life crashs. She is forced to move to California to work on a farm. At first things are very hard but she gets used to thing. If you want to know more you have to read the book.

Besides the amazing coverart, this book was pretty fantastic. After Esparanza's father dies, her creepy uncles take over her farm in Mexico and try to marry her mother. They escape to America, but since they are immigrants, she is no longer the rich princess she used to be.

Inspired by the author's grandmother, this young reader's novel tells the story of Esperanza, child of a wealthy landowner in Mexico, who with her mother must start over in the fields of California during the depression. A wonderful book, that looks at the issue of immigration, change and starting over, poverty and hope, and connecting to your roots. I would give this 5 out of 5 stars, perfect for the young reader.
