CIA überagent Mitch Rapp covertly enters pre-9/11 Iraq to destroy a cache of Saddam Hussein’s WMD (if only it were that easy). Separation of Power continues where The Third Option leaves off, but without the punch. I felt this novel lacked the excitement of Flynn’s previous novels, with much of the plot revolving around political maneuvering and interparty bickering (and some international intrigue thrown in) rather than adrenaline-pumping action of Rapp’s exploits. Too many meetings between the President and the CIA Director, Pentagon Generals, politicians, etc.— plus Rapp’s personal life — bogged down the plot, so much I thought Rapp was relegated to a secondary character. The last one-fourth of the novel, however, does live up to its “thrill-a-page novel” billing; to me it just took too long to get there. Nevertheless, Flynn’s talent will have me reading Executive Power in the future.
