I liked this book because it was exciting and had a lot of suspense. Fiona Finnegan is a 17 year old girl from London with big dreams, determined to accomplish them. But when she learns the truth behind her father's death, Fiona goes to New York with her brother to seek a new life. This book is filled with terrible loss, but Fiona is still determined to follow her dreams.

I was afraid I was going to be rolling my eyes at some of the very nearly Horatio Alger-esque happenings that unfold in this girl’s life, however, Donnelly is deft enough at characterization to have the reader so deeply involved in the lives of the people you meet in her book, that I was quite able to forgive a few things that seemed at first a bit far fetched. Her basic themes, of following a dream to its fruition, the irreplacable bond of family ties, and of course, love conquering all, are just sure to move most any one (and myself included) to tears several times throughout this big, rich novel. The irrepressible Fiona Finnegan is an inspiration to women of any generation.
