Magic Knight Rayearth. Volume 1
CLAMP (Mangaka group)
Teen Fiction CLAMP
From Library Journal:
The works of the four-woman manga creation team known as Clamp are among the most popular manga in the United States, despite their variable quality. This boxed set collects an extensively revised new edition of one of Clamp's best, the story of three 14-year-old Japanese schoolgirls who are summoned to the world of Cephiro, where they must face great trials in order to become Magic Knights and save the land. The books have been reconfigured into Tokyopop's "Authentic Manga" format-a signal that this right-to-left format has received wide acceptance in the United States. The gray shading of Clamp's highly detailed artwork is better reproduced here than in the original, and the art has a softer feel. The sometimes prosaic and unclear translated script in the original has been improved, and the text is presented in a less mechanical-looking font. Finally, while the original versions were poorly bound and prone to falling apart, the binding is greatly improved here. The 64-page "Memorial Book" includes three short stories in full color, a rarity for manga, along with an encyclopedia of the series. The books are marked "Youth: Age 7+" by Tokyopop, but because of bloody violence they are best placed in teen collections, where they should find wide readership. Volumes 4-6 of this series, comprising a much inferior sequel, have also been reconfigured, and with any luck Tokyopop will do the same for its other poorly bound early publications such as Sailor Moon. Recommended for all collections, especially those in need of replacements for the original editions. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
