I thought I was on Holocaust/World War II overload before I picked up this book, but it shows what a brilliant writer and thinker Jenna Blum is that I found myself fully immersed in the world she created, which caused me to think about this era in a whole new way. I read this book two years ago and I still find myself haunted by her tragic heroines, each with her own demons to overcome. It is not an easy read, but a thoroughly satisfying one. Truly one of the most extraordinary books I’ve read in years.

The bigger theme of the book is the mother daughter relationship. The question is if one generation is entitled to know all the stories, good and bad, of another generation. What are bounderies? When should we give up expecting parents to be the reason our life is what it is and take personal responsibility.
