I selected this book off the shelf due to the title and cover. I didn’t expect to like it so much! This was a light and insightful book about a fellow with little direction who finds his way. I thought it was great!

"My parents' Ford station wagon hit a concrete divider on U.S. 95 outside Biddeford, Maine, in August 1990." This is how Smithy Ide, overweight and alcoholic, begins his story and his healing journey. Drunk and in dispair, he jumps on his old raleigh bicycle and starts riding. The chapters alternate with his current adventures and his memories of growing up with a sister with severe mental health problems. While riding, he snaps out of his stupor, faces his demons and acknowledges the love that has been there all along. This is a beautifully written tale of survival.

This was a wonderful book. The main character finds his way, comes to terms with family issues and truly blossoms. I really enjoyed this book. It is well written.
