Scalzi's style reminds me of Lois McMaster Bujold's. I really like how he writes his characters, and the action is a lot of fun too!

They take people with decades of life experience and give them a new life as super soldiers fighting for humanity's survival. John Perry discovers just what this means when he joins up on his 75th birthday. A great action adventure that includes many clever, funny, and poignant moments. Just won the Campbell Award for best new writer in 2005.

On his 75th birthday, John Perry joined the army. He chose to join, even knowing that he can never return to Earth, because he supposes that the Colonial Defense force has a way of retooling his body so that he will be young again. He finds comraderie with other recruits as they battle aliens for habitable planets in a crowded galaxy.

Science fiction at it’s best. Fast paced, fun ideas, and a wonderful sense of humor. Scalzi’s a lot of fun to read.
