Barbara Mertz graduated from the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute with a Ph.D. in Egyptology. Her first three works were non-fiction titles dealing with topics in her field of study. These titles, "Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs," "Red Land, Black Land" and "Two Thousand Years in Rome" were written using her true name. She also writes romantic suspense novels under the pseudonymns Barbara Michaels and Elizabeth Peters. Peters created a strong female character for each of her three series of books. Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is the main character in the Barbara Michaels series and the Elizabeth Peters' series feature art historian Vicky Bliss and librarian Jacqueline Kirby.
