A confusing, Snooze-O-Rama
I will never figure out why this movie was all the buzz during award season- and how it actually won awards.
This story picks up in the middle and doesn’t ever really explain characters or offer background information. I thought this movie felt like watching the wedding video of your neighbor’s coworker. Full of random people you know nothing about, have never met and will never see again.
I thought unimportant plot points were too lengthy and important scenes were glossed over. Lengthy: The scene with all the toasts at the rehearsal dinner, and all of the time spent on the wedding band and the guests that sang, danced or recited poems. Glossed over: The scene with the whole family in the dad’s living room and the scene in the mothers living room the night before the wedding. Not to mention that much of the film is as if it were recorded with a handheld video recorder. Too much was unconnected and unexplained. I was expecting a much different film and was disappointed. Boring! I fast-forwarded through a lot of the zero dialogue, non-Anne Hathaway scenes. Don’t waste your time on this one.

Rachel Getting Married is a gift. It’s both a celebration of a union and a tense, webbed family drama. The filming style is documentary, like we’re peeking—eavesdropping—in on the characters. There are moments of humor, anger, joy, violence and affection. It’s not an easy, conventional story; certain ends do not meet, some things remain unresolved, but the movie offers a certain cathartic release and finally a kind of solace, a kind of peace. I was very moved by it.

I agree with itascapark. I found this film moving, well-acted and true to life. Anne Hathaway is really good in this. And I really enjoyed seeing Debra Winger in a movie again. Her character was unlikable but as always, she’s an excellent actor.
