(1958) 100% (A) (22) Tomatoes * * * * "See my profile for the key to this code" * * * * SYNOPSIS: "The story of an exiled princess, a masterful warrior, and two bungling misfits in search of gold. During a civil war in 16th-century feudal Japan, two cowardly farmers stumble upon Makabe (Toshir Mifune), a fierce army general. Escaping from hostile territory, General Makabe has embarked on a mission to rescue both the willfull princess of his ruling house, and the royal fortune. In the selfish hopes of finding the gold, the two misfits accompany the hardened soldier through dangerous mountain passes. CONSENSUS: "No Star Wars fan should miss this suspiciously familiar samurai epic." MOTIVATION FOR ME TO SEE: Ever since being introduced to director Akiro Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (1954) and "Rashomon" (1950) on TCM, and tracking down "Dersu Usula" (1975) as an ILL (30 Apr 09), more often than not I'm astonished by his mastery. Also, Mifune is necessary for any samurai epic. MY THOUGHTS: Definitely a surprise - Kurosawa meets Hollywood, with doses of the epic (large battle scenes) combined with slapstick humor (a seven minute duel with spears, shortly followed by gunfire (machine gun?). Rarely a dull moment. Also, many reviews were along the lines of " introducing comedy into the mixture and telling the tale from an atypical perspective, Kurosawa has differentiated "The Hidden Fortress" from nearly every similar feudal era Japanese epic ever commited to the screen..." and "...George Lucas gives this Kurosawa classic its props as one of his inspirations for "Star Wars."
