(2006) 88% (%) ) NYT Critics' Pick http://movies.nytimes.com/2006/12/06/movies/06isla.html * * * * "See my profile for the key to this code" * * * * SYNOPSIS: "This documentary visits Ingmar Bergman, one of the 20th century's greatest film directors, in his home on Sweden's Fr Island, where he ruminates on his own masterpieces, as well as the influences that have had such lasting importance for him. A candid interview with the reclusive director, as he discusses his fears, regrets, films, and passion for his work." CONSENSUS: "Compelling viewing for any fan of Swedish master Ingmar Bergman. An extraordinarily revealing documentary portrait of the Swedish director at his home on the desolate Baltic Island of Faro." MOTIVATION FOR ME TO SEE: Previously I'd seen the Dick Cavett interview of Bergman on TCM, which recently got a repeat airing along with a showing of five of his films (two of which, "Hour of the Wolf" (1968) and "The Passion of Anna" (1969), I'd not seen previously), and this doc should make my understanding of Bergman more complete. MY THOUGHTS: You don't have to be a Bergman fan to enjoy this doc. I think it would make a great introduction to those who haven't seen any of his films. He didn't sign things with a cartoon devil without having a good reason. [New Purchase by HCL]
