In Stitches, a new work presented in graphic art form, David Small tells the story of his lonely childhood (abuse, cancer, mother from hell). Never gratuitous, this redemptive memoir is a powerful experience and impossible to forget. In a word: wow. (David Small wrote and illustrated many children’s books including the popular Imogene’s Antlers.)

What an amazing piece of work. The illustrations combined with peeking in on part of the author’s childhood is the the ultimate in storytelling. Though David Small is known for writing books for children, this one is for adults. Add this graphic novel to your reading list (I read it in just a few hours). It will definitely pluck at your heartstrings while leaving you in awe by the survival skills of this most talented man.

A very interesting and heart rending memoir in comic style. I found the art beautiful and haunting, the story even more so. Full of tragedy and drops of dark humor, this memoir gives one pause.
