A story of triumph and true courage. Also a glimpse of how women lived under the Taliban - I can’t even begin to imagine... I was also amazed and envious at the loyalty and cooperation within the family.

The story flowed well and as the author says shows more about Afganistan than what I saw on the news, a warzone where the Taliban and Osama bin Laden lived. It shows how the citizen’s of Kabul were effected overnight by the Taliban rule. Kamila’s story of her strong faith and family support to help her drive on to help herself, family and community is beautiful.

Not as shocking or inspirational as one might expect from the interesting subject matter, but Lemmon’s story is informative and triumphant and important. Personal narratives such as this offer a window into a country most of us know too little about, as well as perspectives about the Taliban, women prior to the new government, and civilian reaction to the September 11 events. It is concise and well-written, suited to a group discussion.
