Suburbs have been the subject of ridicule and jest in popular culture for a long time. The American dream of the past was often entwined with the ownership of a single-family home in the suburbs. Gallagher creates a fascinating portrayal of the origins of the suburbs followed by a dramatic dialog about America’s housing future. Many emerging factors have coalesced to create a culture in which the general population craves a wider variety of living accommodations. The collapse of the housing bubble is just one factor in this changing cultural picture. Millennials are flocking to urban areas and first ring suburbs, movements like the New Urbanists are transforming traditional suburban design and retail chains are downsizing to fit into the changing housing climate. The question remains, what will happen to the suburbs as the American dream continues to shift and evolve?
