Watching the credits at the end of the movie "The American" with George Clooney I noticed that it had been based on this book and so, having liked the movie, I decided to read the book and I was not disappointed. The main character, Signor Farfalla (Mister Butterfly), lives in a small town in the Apennines chain of mountains in Italy. People call him Signor Farfalla because they think he makes his living by painting butterflies. He tries to keep a low profile and does not have any friends, except for the local priest with whom he has frequent encounters and discussions. Since you may not have seen the movie I won't tell you what Signor Farfalla's real job is. Suffice it to say that it is morally questionable, potentially risky and highly remunerative. The plot is engaging and, if you get to like Signor Farfalla you will start questioning your own sense of right and wrong.
