The color of magic
This novel is the first in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, an excellent series of books that tell stories which range from the ludicrously absurd to heartwarming. They only continue to improve as time goes on.

The warrior's apprentice
Bujold, Lois McMaster.
The first in a science fiction series that remains rather firmly grounded in reality, focusing on the adventures of Miles Vorkosigan, who is the son of a high-ranking Count in the not-technically-evil Barrayaran Empire. The impressive backdrop allows for many interesting stories.
Adult Fiction BUJOLD

Arrows of the queen
Lackey, Mercedes.
The first novel in Mercedes Lackey's longest series, the Heralds of Valdemar. Fascinatingly protrayed characters act against a rich and detailed backdrop, as magic and armies move. Warning: several homosexual characters, for those who don't like that sort of thing.
Adult Fiction LACKEY

Joust
Lackey, Mercedes.
Joust is the first novel in the Dragon Jousters Quartet, a series by Mercedes Lackey which focuses on, well, dragon jousters, who ride on dragons and try to knock enemy jousters off using lances. In spite of this rather strange concept, the series performs quite admirably, as the fate of two entire nations ends up turning quite believably on the actions of the protagonist.

His Majesty's Dragon
Novik, Naomi.
His Majesty's Dragon is one of the only alternate history novels I've read that I actually enjoyed. Dragons fight each other in the skies in the Napoleonic era.

Sandry's book
Pierce, Tamora.
This novel is the beginning of the Circle of Magic series, which continues for eight more books (to my knowledge) after the first one, as the characters mature. An extremely enjoyable series with rich, detailed characters.

Wild magic
Pierce, Tamora.
Wild Magic is one of the novels of Tamora Pierce, set in her fictional land of Tortall. In it, myth and magic clash against the medieval era backdrop.

The crystal shard
Salvatore, R. A., 1959-
This book is one of many novels of the Forgotten Realms series, which take place on the mythical continent of Faerun. This particular book follows the adventures of a main character whose name I have given up attempting to spell from memory, an outcast from his (horrifyingly evil) kind, as he struggles to survive amongst relatively good people.
Adult Fiction SALVATO

Mistborn : the final empire
Sanderson, Brandon.
The Mistborn series is one of the most original fantasy books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. With an incredibly detailed backstory which mostly consists of the villain succeeding in killing the hero and conquering the world a thousand years previously at first, but which becomes more and more complex as time goes on, a developing heroine character, and a completly original system of magic, this is one of the best new books to emerge in a decade.
Adult Fiction SANDERS

Dragons of autumn twilight
Weis, Margaret.
This is the first in the massive Dragonlance series, covering the land of Krynn, as dragons emerge from hiding with much evil and world-conquering.
Adult Fiction WEIS

This is the first in the novel continuation of the Star Wars trilogy, taking place ten years after the first one, as the Empire reemerges behind a strong new leader.
