Mike G. books
This list is the result of working in a library. There is no pattern to the selections, beyond a preponderance of non-fiction. Sometimes a patron recommends a title, sometimes a book cries, "Read me!" on its way to an uncertain fate at the end of the conveyor belt.   Print this list Print this list

The Turing omnibus : 61 excursions in computer science
Dewdney, A. K.
If you like puzzles and computers, this book will entertain you for hours. As a bonus, if you manage to solve any of the problems, you will probably win an international award. Mike.

This is how you lose her [sound recording]
Diaz, Junot, 1968-
Junot Diaz wins the Pulitzer Prize for Pervasive Profanity. I had to sequester myself for twelve hours after listening to this novel for fear that the swearing would slip out of my mouth in public. If your repertoire of imaginary voices does not extend to New Jersey Dominican, the audio book read by the author enriches the experience. Mike.

Infidel
Hirsi Ali, Ayaan, 1969-
Writing in reaction to the murder of Theo van Gogh, Ayaan Hirsi Ali traces her path from a Somali Muslim to a Dutch atheist. At an age when she was fleeing the civil war in Somalia, I was whimpering about a mean lab professor. While she challenged a thousand years of religious tradition, I boldly renounced...cable TV. If she has the courage to speak her convictions, the least I can do is listen. Mike.

No easy answers : Bayard Rustin and the civil rights movement
Miller, Calvin Craig, 1954-
Civil rights activist Bayard Rustin had the credentials to ride in the front of the bus with other famous personages whose paths intersected with his, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Roy Wilkins and Malcolm X. The book explains why he did not. At first, the title, “No easy answers,” does not seem apt, because Rustin stated his principles clearly and followed them faithfully. One question with no easy answer might enter your mind after you finish: Did Rustin's choices accelerate the changes that made his choices unnecessary? The library also has a DVD about his life and work. Mike.

The better angels of our nature [sound recording] : why violence has declined
Pinker, Steven, 1954-
Pinker challenges the reader's intuition (and the nightly news) by asserting that violence on all scales has decreased over the centuries. Although the historical statistics are just as contestible as newspaper polls, the conclusions from neurobiology combined with classic experiments from psychology give credence to the thesis. The causes which Pinker associates with the trend may displease some members of the political spectrum, but few will object to the prospect of surviving to old age with one's limbs intact. Mike.

Better off without 'em : a Northern manifesto for Southern secession
Thompson, Chuck.
"Manifesto" in the title created the expectation of a reasoned argument for the division of the United States, but no, this is just a tirade against Southerners. If you like prejudicial humor and stereotypes, the book will make you laugh. If you are looking for a political thought experiment, keep on walking. Mike.
