In the land of blood and honey [videorecording]
This drama written and directed by Angelina Jolie changed my opinion of Hollywood starlets. They can grow and make meaningful contributions to the art. Mike.

Medianeras [videorecording] = Sidewalls
The commentary claims that this Argentinian film is based on Woody Allen's "Manhattan". Apart from the clip from Manhattan played in the movie, I don't see much resemblance. If the two are put in the same class, I prefer Medianeras. It makes better use of the visual medium and the characters don't talk you to death. Mike.

Plus tard [videorecording] = One day you'll understand
Actor Hippolyte Girardot has made several films about French Judaism. This is one of the recent, serious performances. Mike.

Polisse [videorecording]
This movie is a counterpoint to "In the Land of Blood and Honey," listed above. Some starlets need more time to develop their directorial ability. I do not think that real police departments act as director/actress Maiwenn portrays them. The ending is totally disconnected from the story. Best performance by the boy who plays Ousmane. Mike.

The night of truth [videorecording] = La nuit de la verite
This fictional story of civil war in Burkina Faso--which could represent any number of conflicts across the continent--depicts the difficult journey of a village from blind hatred to weary reconciliation. The writer's compassion shows through the characters' enmity, leading them from blind hatred to weary reconciliation and leaving the viewer staring in shock after the climax.

The white meadows [videorecording] = Keshtzar haye sepid
Iranian cinema has developed a fine skill for social commentary within the confines of the state censors. The references in "The White Meadows" are so obscure that I struggle to see the connection. Have you ever sought clarification in the director's commentary on a DVD, only to be anesthetized by an analysis of the props and makeup? This DVD contains a genuine study guide in PDF format to help you understand the action. Another movie, "Poulet aux prunes," offers an allegory of Iran's history within a tender love story that might be easier to understand, while "The White Meadows" questions the norms more sharply. Mike.
