In cold blood [compact disc]
Capote, Truman, 1924-1984
The strength of a town when it faces a real life horror story. No one in my family was allowed to read the story since my great-grandmother was friends of the family in Kansas. Very graphic and sad, but wonderfully written by a caring author.

Papillon
Charriere, Henri, 1906-1973
I've read this book three times already. There's a sequel, Banco, by the same author. Not as good as the first but definitely worth reading if you are left wanting more after Papillon.

Invisible man
Ellison, Ralph
Read this in high school, so I was shown the subtle symbolism and artistic style. May be worth reading the cliff-notes along with it.
