Books for Trans Teens
The trans-library-geek recommends some books that trans youth may find interesting or comforting or affirming ................................................................................ Not every book here is going to work for every trans youth and there's at least a few here that could be triggering, but they've all got good points. Try them out! If they're not doing it for you, you have my official librarian permission to stop reading :) ................................................................................... I'm trying to still keep this up, but I've moved out of state and have a totally different library job now working with youth in lockup, so I'm not as on top of it as I might like to be.    Print this list Print this list

Teenage boy enjoys dressing up as Debbie Harry. And really, who doesn't? If you have no idea who Debbie Harry is, don't tell me...you'll make me feel really really old.

Dole, Mayra L.
One of the best, and only, portrayals of a truly genderqueer teen. The book itself isn't all that great, but it's worth reading just for that.

Katcher, Brian.
Boy meets girl. Boy really likes girl. Girl has a secret. Bet you can't guess what it is! I was impressed with how real this one was, not at all sensationalistic. Just a really truthful look at how hard falling in love can be, especially when you're carrying around body parts or chromosomes that just don't feel right.

McLaughlin, Lauren
Instead of getting her period, the main character of this book turns into a boy for a few days every month. Sounds kinda ridiculous, right? It is, but it's also a new viewpoint on how it feels to be trapped in the wrong body.

My favorite manga of all time. I cosplay the main character. Read it, even if you're not a manga person. It's intense and totally worth it.

You should add Wandering Son to the list. It's one of the best, and certainly the most well known of trans mangas. The first few volumes have just gotten translated and the rest are on their way.
