City Fantasy
A list of fantasy titles that center around an urban locale. Where the location or city plays a central role. Some call this "urban fantasy" but avoid that term since it has come to be defined as softcore erotica wrapped in teen angst.   Print this list Print this list

Butcher, Jim, 1971-
Old fashioned "hard boiled" Detective series with a Fantasy twist set in contemporary Chicago. The author seems to have run out of ideas for what terrible thing can happen to the main character around book 11 and the first person narrative gets a little whiny around book 12.. but overall a strong series.

Helprin, Mark.
Very odd book. A unique look at the development of New York City over time as seen through a mythological lens. It can't really be described as having a plot. Most of the beauty is in the description and view of the world.

Jacka, Benedict
Almost a tribute spin off series to the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher. A welcome breath of fresh air, as Mr Butcher seems to have run out of things to torture his main character with. This is set in London with the main characters "magic" a mix of old fashioned seer and quantum theory.

Pierce, Tamora
Tamora Pierce comes through again with a well rounded strong female character. Terry Pratchett fans will recognize this as a more serious treatment of the same issues explored in the humorous "City Watch - Discworld" series.

Pratchett, Terry.
Mr Pratchett is to Fantasy what Douglas Adams was to Sci Fi. Thankfully for his readers he is much more prolific, alive and kicking, and able to make deadlines, so we have plenty of material to enjoy. This part of his famous "discworld" series really starts to investigate what makes a city work. In this case he takes his sharp wit to see how the "city guard" or medieval police force of "Ankh-Morpork" is a vital living part of the city.
Adult Fiction PRATCHE
